Always interested in mathematics, Dr. Howard Jerome Keisler’s father began teaching him math when he was four years old. Originally, he didn’t believe that he could pursue a career in the field. Once he attended college, however, he was fascinated by how much he could accomplish from reasoning with mathematics. In 1959, he obtained a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from the California Institute of Technology, and in 1961, he received a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of California.
With an expertise in mathematical logic, Dr. Keisler began his career as a mathematician at the Institute for Defense Analyses in Princeton, NJ. Then, in 1962, he joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as an assistant professor. He was promoted to associate professor from 1964 to 1967, and then became a full professor and served in this position for 15 years. In 1982, Dr. Keisler became a William F. Vilas professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
As a dedicated educator, Dr. Keisler was close to many of his doctorate students. He took great care in ensuring that they excelled in their careers, and many of them went on to become professors themselves. As a respected voice in his field, he was invited to lecture at the International Congress of Mathematics in France in 1972.
