With more than 45 years of professional experience, Dean Naomi Brown has risen to prominence as a major figure in the state of Alaska. Currently, she serves as the Deputy State Forester with the Division of Forestry for the Department of Natural Resources. She has held her position of deputy state forester since 1990. Prior, she served as the department’s acting director of agriculture, as well as the northern region manager of its Division of Land and Water Management. Additionally, Ms. Brown holds the positions of designated alternate member on the Governor’s Disaster Policy Cabinet; designated member of the Governor’s State Emergency Response Commission; co-chair of the State of Alaska’s Department of Natural Resources’ computer group; and member of the interagency Alaska Wildland Fire Coordination Group.
Ms. Brown earned a Bachelor of Science in geology from the University of Wisconsin Madison in 1967. She began her career in 1971 as a geology lecturer at Indiana University in Kokomo, Ind. Subsequently, she worked as a geologist for AMAX Coal Company in Indianapolis. A native of Nome, Alaska, Ms. Brown then worked as a field construction engineer for Fluor Corporation on the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, which was completed in 1977. Ms. Brown formerly held positions at several companies, including Wien Alaska Airlines, Enserch Alaska Construction, Inc., Placer Dome U.S. Inc., and Northwind Aviation.
Throughout the course of her career, Ms. Brown has exercised her passion for her profession and personal interests through several affiliations, including the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, Alaska Airmen Association and the Ninety- Nines, Inc. In 2006, she served on the Interim Committee of the National Association of State Foresters. Passionate about horses and wildlife, Ms. Brown has been a charter member of Pacific Rim Arabian Horse Association since 1997, and served on the board of directors of the Alaska Horse Breeders Association, Inc. from 1984 to 1990. She was a volunteer with the Iditarod Trail Committee for many years as a photographer assistant to the official photographer.
Since entering her field, Ms. Brown has been recognized for her hard work and dedication. Early in her career, she was the recipient of the Certificate of Appreciation from the City of Valdez, Certificate of Achievement from the Girl Scouts of the USA, and Certificate of Appreciation from the Anchorage School District. She also received the Outstanding Achievement Award from Alaska’s Department of Natural Resources and the Certificate of Appreciation from 4-H Positive Youth Development and Mentoring Organization. In 2017, Ms. Brown was recognized a Top Professional by Marquis Who’s Who.
