Fattaneh Abbas-Zadeh Tavassoli is an internationally recognized expert on breast and gynecologic pathology. Since earning a Doctor of Medicine from Saint Louis University School of Medicine in 1972, Dr. Tavassoli has become a highly sought-after speaker and educator around the world. She completed her residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, the teaching hospital for Washington University School of Medicine, and also holds a diploma from both the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Anatomic Pathology.
During a time when few women in the United States were attending medical school, Dr. Tavassoli embraced the opportunity to enter the health care sector because she wanted “to help humanity.” She credits her success to the teachers who encouraged and motivated her, and always reminded her to never “let anything stop her.” Retired since 2016, Dr. Tavassoli now holds the title of Professor Emeritus of Pathology at Yale School of Medicine, which she joined in 2003 as a professor of pathology and director of Women’s Health/Gynecology & Breast Pathology.
Throughout her 40-year career in medicine and academia, Dr. Tavassoli held several positions at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology at Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va., and in Washington, D.C. Among her other prestigious positions, Dr. Tavassoli was a consultant in the Department of Surgical Pathology at the National Institutes of Health and the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Additionally, she previously served as a professor at Georgetown University School of Medicine, George Washington University, and the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences. Moreover, from 1975 to 1976, she was a fellow in gynecological pathology at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center. Today, Dr. Tavassoli offers consultation services for challenging lesions of breast, ovary, uterus, vulva and vagina.
To stay up to date on changes in her industry, Dr. Tavassoli maintains affiliation with various organizations, including the United States & Canadian Academy of Pathology, the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, the International Academy of Pathology, the Arthur Purdy Stout Society of Surgical Pathologists and the International Society of Gynecological Pathologists. In addition to being recognized as one of America’s best doctors and scientists, Dr. Tavassoli is an author and a contributor of over 140 articles to professional journals. For her professional achievements, she has been listed in Marquis Who’s Who publications such as Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the East and Who’s Who in the South and Southwest.
