When he first entered the field of accounting, J. Craig Carter worked for General Dynamics. At one point, the company was being audited and he was subsequently assigned to a team that reported to the Board of Directors and the Audit Committee Chair. Thereafter, his expertise in auditing began to grow. Today, Mr. Carter is a renowned global leader of internal audit innovation. With knowledge of internal audit transformation and FCPA compliance, he is a partner of KPMG, LLP, and is accountable for internal audit innovation and technology enablement across the accounting firm’s 75 national internal audit practices. Previously, Mr. Carter served as the internal audit leader of the company’s Southeast Region Advisory practice, contract compliance services leader for the Midwest Region, and internal audit leader of the Gateway West practice. Prior to joining KPMG, LLP in 2004, he was a senior manager at Ernst & Young.

Passionate about his field of work, Mr. Carter actively maintains affiliation with the Institute of Internal Auditors and the National Association of Corporate Directors. Additionally, he is a member of the KPMG Lead Partner Institute and Phi Beta Kappa. Deeply rooted in his community, Mr. Carter serves on the board of directors for the Kansas City Lyric Opera. He also contributes to United Way and the Kansas City Leadership Program.

Mr. Carter paved the way to his successful career by earning a Bachelor of Arts with distinction in English and history from Baylor University in 1979. He also pursued graduate-level coursework toward a Master of Arts in English, a Juris Doctor, and a Master of Business Administration. Since joining the field, Mr. Carter has attributed his success to his continuous learning, as well as his ability to solve problems in creative and innovative ways. Recognized for his many achievements, he was the recipient of the KPMG Mentoring Award in 2007, 2008 and 2009. He has also received the Extraordinary Achievement Award from Sprint in 1998 and the Extraordinary Achievement Award from General Dynamics in 1986.
