Dr. James A. Obney is a well-regarded cardiothoracic surgeon who has accrued more than 23 years of professional experience in his field. Serving as a staff surgeon at Mount Carmel Medical Group since 2017 and a staff physician at Fairfield Medical Center since 2023, much of his routine responsibilities include performing rounds, consulting with patients on post-operative procedures, and performing surgeries such as coronary bypass surgery, heart valve surgery, and surgeries related to lung cancer. Impressively, he initiated a program for robotic lung surgery at Mount Carmel Medical Group, which he has continued at Fairfield Medical Center, where it is implemented daily.
Previously, Dr. Obney served with the James Haley VA Hospital for five years, where he rose to the position of section chief of cardiac surgery. He also worked as an instructor at the University of South Florida. Spending 13 years with the United States Army between 1993 and 2006, where he escalated to the rank of lieutenant colonel, he served extensively in Iraq before returning to the United States to work at the Tampa VA Hospital in Florida. Thereafter, Dr. Obney relocated to Texas, where he also worked at the United Regional Healthcare System for nearly 10 years, serving as the section chief and, later, the deputy chief of the surgical department.
Dr. Obney’s commitment to medicine is evident in the testimonials of the residents who worked under his supervision during their clinical rotations, many of whom looked up to Dr. Obney as a mentor as well as an educator. In accounting for his success, he credits the influence of his parents, who had longstanding tenures in the field of education and exemplified a terrific work ethic. Dr. Obney holds a bachelor’s degree from Case Western Reserve University and a Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Ohio at Toledo. Subsequently, he completed a residency and fellowship at the Brooke Army Medical Center and earned a Master of Jurisprudence in health care law, policy and management from the Texas A&M University School of Law.
A member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the Florida Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons, Dr. Obney also maintains an affiliation with the American Heart Association. Looking toward the future, Dr. Obney endeavors to continue advancing in his medical career, particularly in the realm of robotic surgery, which is swiftly gaining momentum in surgical practice.
