Supported by nearly 20 years of research experience, Dr. Andrew M. Dai is well-regarded for his expertise in machine learning, large language models and research. Seamlessly blending research with software engineering, his innovative work sets him apart from conventional researchers, and he has made strides within the technology sector. Since 2012, Dr. Dai has worked as a researcher at Google, where he currently serves as a director and principal research scientist. Earlier in his career, he worked for Google as a software engineer intern in 2008 and 2009 and for Autonomy as a software developer from 2006 to 2007. He commenced his career as an ISAAS intern at Ernst & Young in 2005.
To prepare for his career, Dr. Dai pursued a formal education in Europe. Attending the University of Cambridge, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in computer science in 2006. After accruing years in his field, he returned to higher education at the University of Edinburgh and received a Doctor of Philosophy in machine learning in 2012. A member of ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) in his spare time, Dr. Dai has also served as an area chair for NeurIPS, ICML and ICLR conferences. Most recently, he was a co-tutorial chairperson at the NeurIPS Conference in 2024.
In light of his outstanding achievements, Dr. Dai has been recognized on several occasions. In 2023, he was the recipient of the Tech Impact Award from Google. Although he has experienced many career milestones, he is particularly proud of his 2015 paper on the effectiveness of training and fine-tuning language models to improve their ability to understand language. To wit, Dr. Dai’s paper was published in NIPS in 2015 and has been cited over 1,500 times, serving as a testament to its notable impact on the technology sector.
Looking toward the future, Dr. Dai endeavors to experience the continued growth of his career. Impressively, he aims to assume a leadership role and establish a start-up.
