Drawing upon more than 35 years of professional excellence, Dr. Mary Eva Swigar is distinguished in the fields of neuropsychiatry and academia. From a formative age, she discovered her passion for the brain, hormones and neurotransmitters and subsequently decided to dedicate her life to the subject. Receiving a Bachelor of Science from Muhlenberg College in 1962, she went on to earn a Doctor of Medicine from Temple University in 1966 and became a registered psychiatrist in the State of New Jersey.

Now retired, Dr. Swigar committed much of her professional career to Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, serving as an associate professor of psychiatry and neuropsychiatry from 1988 until attaining professor emerita status in 2013. She previously served as an associate professor of psychiatry at Yale University from 1977 to 1988. Congruent to these roles, Dr. Swigar excelled as the chief of psychiatry and a member of the Institutional Review Board at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey, where she notably served as the chairperson of the Institutional Review Board from 1993 to 2010. Alongside her primary profession, Dr. Swigar has contributed several articles to professional journals in her areas of expertise.

To remain abreast of developments in her industry, Dr. Swigar is recognized as a member of the Royal Society of Medicine and the New York Academy of Science, as well as a fellow of the International College of Psychosomatic Medicine. Likewise, in recognition of her longstanding tenure in psychiatry and education, she was bestowed with the Lifetime Achievement Award from her alma mater, Muhlenberg College.

Among the many milestones of her career, Dr. Swigar is particularly proud of her achievements in psychiatry, emphasizing that the field has offered her a broad range of opportunities that also included research ethics. Looking toward the future, she aims to continue enjoying her well-deserved retirement while maintaining professional alignment with various universities, conferences and societies. She was selected for inclusion in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who of American Women.
