Education

Dr. William A. McIntosh possesses over 40 years of professional experience in the fields of education and sociology. Now retired, he formerly served as a full professor in the department of sociology at Texas A&M University from 1989 until attaining emeritus status in 2021. Earlier, he served Texas A&M University as an associate professor from 1980 to 1989 and an assistant professor from 1975 to 1980. He commenced his career at the acclaimed academic institution in 1975, working as an instructor in the department of sociology and anthropology. Additionally, Dr. McIntosh was a visiting fellow in the division of nutrition at Cornell University in 1991.

Over the course of his extensive career, Dr. McIntosh has specialized in the sociological aspects of food and nutrition. Notably, he was invited to work with various public health, nutrition and plant specialists on a campaign that educated children on the importance of healthy eating. The undertaking received a $5 million grant and was well-received by over 30 elementary schools across the state of Texas. Additionally, Dr. McIntosh wrote a book over 30 years ago that promoted healthy eating and nutrition, serving as introductory material for fellow sociologists to intertwine sociology with food and nutrition. Likewise, Dr. McIntosh has been a first author and second author on numerous papers written for the Journal of Rural Social Science, Maternal and Child Nutrition, and Sociological Quarterly.

As a testament to his success, Dr. McIntosh has received several accolades. In 2014, he was a member of the research team that received the Superior Service Award from the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. Additionally, in 1993, he earned the Association of Former Students University-Level Teaching Award, and in 1973, he also received the George Freeman Memorial Award. Impressively, the Best Graduate Student Paper Award from the Association for the Study of Food and Society was also named in his honor.

Dr. McIntosh holds a Bachelor of Science in political science from the University of California Berkeley and a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in sociology from Iowa State University. Looking toward the future, Dr. McIntosh intends to begin writing another book pertaining to the importance of food and nutrition. Although he is now in his retirement years, he aims to continue researching and collecting data for his book.
