Entrepreneurship

While coming of age, Wanda Lynn Wheeler-Mains was noteworthy for her dedication to her studies and hard-working attitude. Having combined her seventh and eighth-grade coursework into one year in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, she was selected amid a group of students to complete her education at Chauncey High School in Ohio in only three years. After graduation, Ms. Wheeler-Mains married and had a child. As such, while expecting her second child, she understood that her home required supplemental income. Ms. Wheeler-Mains joined Avon in 1956 at just 22 years old.

Over the course of 65 years, Ms. Wheeler-Mains has excelled as a representative for Avon, selling the company’s vast array of beauty products using her own engaging personality, kindness and sociable demeanor. Notably, she thoroughly enjoys taking care of her many clients, many of whom went on to become Avon representatives themselves and close personal friends. In light of her success, Ms. Wheeler-Mains became an assistant manager at Avon and was honored with membership in the exclusive Avon President’s Club.

Ms. Wheeler-Mains lives by the motto “Love your neighbor as yourself,” and her commitment to her personal mantra has been proven vital in her reputation as an excellent salesperson, Avon trainer and community advocate. Lending her time and expertise to her neighborhood, she has been a communications secretary, personal ministry member and pianist for the Seventh-Day Adventist Church and a volunteer for various fundraising events with Hope for Humanity. Equally passionate about the written word, Ms. Wheeler-Mains is an accomplished writer, having contributed poems and essays to “Pickin’ Fleas: Writers Grooming Writers,” a book of written works by the Athens Writers Association that was published in 2002. Additionally, she enjoys singing for the Athens Community Center, as well as with local singing groups and nursing homes.

In the coming years, Ms. Wheeler-Mains intends to continue spending valuable time with her family and friends. She would like to leave a legacy as a caring individual and personable community member.
