Drawing upon an extensive military tenure and interest in the sciences, Deborah J. Callender has excelled as a physical scientist in the Naval Oceanographic Office at the John C. Stennis Space Center in Mississippi since 2008. Joining the Space Center in 2006, she served for two years as an associate software engineer in general dynamics information technology. Previously, Ms. Callender was a geographic information systems programs manager for Lincoln County, Montana, from 2005 to 2006. She commenced her career in 2004 as a director of spatial information management services for Pearl River County, Mississippi.

Drawing upon several advanced degrees, most recently including a Master of Science in computer science, 3D visualization and animation from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2004, Ms. Callender holds a geographic information science certification from the aforementioned university. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in English, a master’s degree in management and an associate degree in computer systems analysis from prestigious academic institutions across the United States. Prior to delving into her professional career, Ms. Callender served as an administrative clerk and personal financial records clerk to the United States Marine Corps from 1974 to 1985, as well as a naval intelligence officer and lieutenant commander with the United States Navy from 1985 to 1998.

Civically involved as well, Ms. Callender has served as a regional competition moderator for the National Ocean Science Bowl since 2008, as well as a studio staff member and dance instructor assistant for the Maureen Bersuder Academy of Dance Arts since 207. She is a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans and a member of the American Association of Geographers, the American Geophysical Union and the American Meteorological Society.

Ms. Callender attributes her immense success to her tenacious attitude and persevering nature, in which she leverages her desire to continually improve upon her existing skills. Looking toward the future, she intends to develop a multi-million dollar specialized contract for her division. She would also like to return to college to pursue an education in marine biology. To attest to her success, Ms. Callender was highlighted in the 71st edition of Who’s Who in America in 2018.
