Duffy, John 4277627_25358029 NewsletterSupported by nearly 40 years of experience in education and administration, John Duffy is a pronounced Latin teacher and department chairman, who retired in 1996. Most recently serving Larkin High School in Elgin, IL, as chairman of English and foreign languages and teacher of Latin beginning in 1977, he previously served the high school as a students’ council advisor. He joined the successful high school in 1962 as a teacher, and from that point forward, he has thoroughly enjoyed the monumental moments of his career.

Prior to joining Larkin High, Mr. Duffy was a teaching assistant at the University of Iowa, a high school teacher at Clear Lake Community Schools, and a junior and senior high school teacher and coach at the Presentation Academy, where he himself attended and initially became interested in the Latin language. Early on after his move to Illinois, he joined the Elgin Teachers Association as a welfare chairman and chief negotiator, eventually rising through the ranks to become president from 1966 to 1967. Since that time, he has served the Illinois Education Association as legislator and chairman of the Northeastern Division, as well as chairman of the ad hoc committee on teacher tenure from the late 1960s to early 1970s.

Previously serving on the board of directors of the American Association of Community Colleges, Mr. Duffy has further contributed his time and expertise to many community-related endeavors within the Town of Elgin. Since 1975, he has been an elected trustee of Elgin Community College, having thrice served as chairman of the board of policies review in 1979, 1997 and 2007. A former three-time chairman and president of the search committee of ECC, he is also a past president and board member of Elgin Area Catholic Social Services and member of the St. Laurence Parish Board.

Among the notable highlights of his career, Mr. Duffy is proudest of serving on the Board of Joint Commission on Federal Legislation for eight years, where they worked on the establishment of the Sunny Montgomery Veterans Law and the Workforce Development Act. Furthermore, he values his time spent as president of the Elgin Teachers Association, citing one excellent moment as when they negotiated a 10% raise on a one-year contract.
