Retired since 2011, Thomas C. Miles is a distinguished mechanical engineer with over 30 years of experience to his credit. An authority in his industry, he served the Lockheed Martin Corporation for the duration of his career, beginning his tenure as an associate engineer of aircraft design in 1980. Escalating through the ranks, he became an engineer of aircraft design in 1982, senior engineer of aircraft design in 1985 and group engineer in 1989. From there, he served as a specialist engineer from 1990 to 1998 and senior specialist engineer from 1998 to 2001. Concluding his career in 2011, he finalized his vocation as a staff engineer for 10 years beginning in 2001.
Alongside his primary career responsibilities, Mr. Miles was a member of the SAR A-6 Military Aircraft and Helicopter Panel from 1987 to 1991 and again from 2009 to 2011. He also sat on the SAE A-10 Aircraft Oxygen Equipment Committee from 1996 to 2010. To remain abreast of developments in the field, he maintains affiliation with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Society for Testing and Materials, the Society of Automotive Engineers and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, where he is an associate fellow.
Likewise, Mr. Miles served Tau Kappa Epsilon in multiple capacities including as chapter advisor from 1980 to 1987, key leader in 1985 and again in 1990, district vice president from 1984 to 1999, district president from 1987 to 1988 and province advisor from 1999 to 2002. He received the Southern Order of Honor in 1989, the Order of the Silver Maple Leaf in 2009 and the Order of the North in 2017. Further, Mr. Miles was the president and vice president of the Wick’s Lake Homeowners Association and sat on the board of directors of the National Management Association.
In light of his outstanding contributions to engineering and his community, Mr. Miles received the Fraternity Award and the Education Foundation Medal of Excellence. Looking toward the future, he intends to continue visiting his fraternity chapters to teach them screenprinting. He also intends to continue enjoying his retirement.
