Influenced to enter the medical field from a young age, Dr. Amy Catherine Brodkey was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes early on, which inspired her to become heavily involved in medicine. Interested in health and women’s health care, she earned a Bachelor of Arts from the prestigious Harvard University and an MD from the University of Pennsylvania. Subsequent to earning a medical degree, she served as a family physician and clinic administrator at the Harrington Memorial Health Center for two years before becoming a staff physician at the Elizabeth Blackwell Health Center for Women until 1980. From there, she was a resident in psychiatry to chief resident at the Hahnemann University School of Medicine until 1983 while simultaneously serving as a resident medical director at the Van Hammett Psychiatric Clinic for one year.
From 1982 to 1985, Dr. Brodkey was a clinical senior instructor in the Department of Mental Health Sciences and a clinical assistant professor at Hahnemann University. During this time, she also served the J.F. Kennedy Community Mental Health Center as a medical director of the Adult Day Hospital in 1984 and supervising psychiatrist from 1984 to 1985. From 1986 to 1991, she was the director of the ICU step-down service at Eastern Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute, having also served the Medical College of Pennsylvania as an assistant professor and associate professor in psychiatry for 11 years and the director of undergraduate medical education for four years.
A former clinical associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania from 1997 to 2015, Dr. Brodkey was also the medical director of behavioral health service at the Family Practice and Counseling Network from 1998 to 2015. Throughout her tenure in medicine and education, she also held her own private practice in psychiatry from 1982 until her retirement in 2018. Through the current day, she remains a delegate and executive board member of the Alliance for Clinical Education.
Dr. Brodkey is a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and holds a subspecialty certification in addiction psychiatry. A contributor of chapters to books and articles to esteemed medical journals, she has received a number of accolades in recognition of her achievements. The recipient of an Outstanding Work in Community Medicine Award from CIBA, she also earned the Moffic Award for Community Psychiatry from the AACP. Likewise, she received the Minority Mental Health Access Award from the American Psychiatric Foundation and is a former HealthPAC fellow.
