Alice G. Moore Pouncey’s expertise dates back to 1961 when she first began serving as a teacher at Enterprise Middle School in Mississippi. Spending the following four years in various teaching positions at the middle school and at J.F. Shields High School in Beatrice, AL, she stumbled upon a unique opportunity to teach at the higher education level in 1969 after obtaining her master’s degree. For the following 32 years, she served East Central Community College in Decatur, MS, as a professor of both psychology and home economics, positions that she greatly enjoyed. She ultimately retired in 2001 after accruing 40 fruitful years in her profession. Alongside her primary career responsibilities, she has contributed her time to civic endeavors with the 4-H Honor Club and her local Methodist church, where she acted as a Sunday school teacher, regent, and member of the church administrative board and chancel choir.
Prior to embarking on her career path, Ms. Pouncey pursued a formal education at Jones County Junior College, where she earned an Associate of Arts in 1959. She then attended the University of Southern Mississippi, receiving a Bachelor of Science in 1961, and the University of West Alabama (formerly known as Livingston University), obtaining a Master of Education in 1968. Over the course of the next 14 years, she completed postgraduate coursework at the University of Southern Mississippi and Mississippi State University. Equally passionate about her students, she dedicated her time to ensuring that each of her students felt important and valued in the classroom. She also remained abreast of community and academic social events, such as athletic games.
Ms. Pouncey was inspired to enter the field of home economics education by her mother and aunt, who were both home economics schoolteachers. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to her field, she was named Outstanding Instructor of the Year by East Central Community College and received the State 4-H Alumni Award. However, she cites the highlight of her career to be raising her family.
