Drawing upon more than 60 years of professional experience, James H. Craig has been a fine arts consultant in Independence, VA, and the owner of James Craig Fine & Decorative Arts since 1985. Involved in the art industry since 1962, he commenced his career as a curator of decorative arts at the North Carolina Office of Archives and History, holding the position for two years before serving the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts as a grantee and writer for the following year. Founding his eponymous company initially in 1965 as a principal, he also served as president of Craig & Tarlton Inc. from 1969 to 1985. Alongside his primary endeavors, Mr. Craig was a former trustee of The Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC, from 2000 to 2006 and a board member of the Chamber Opera Theater of New York and Chamber Music Raleigh. Previously, he served as a consultant and board member of the acquisitions committee for the North Carolina Executive Mansion, as well as a patron of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.

Civically involved as well, Mr. Craig sat on the board of directors of the Sparta Museum Project in North Carolina. Demonstrating versatility in his field, he authored “The Arts and Crafts in North Carolina, 1699-1840” in 1965. As a testament to his profound success, he was named among the 100 Best in the Field by Montgomery. Outside of his professional career, Mr. Craig enjoys art, collecting antiques, and gardening in his spare time.
