Interested in law from a young age, Ronald David Aucutt is now a dedicated lawyer. As a child, he would discuss law with his uncle, John Lommen, who was a lawyer and founder of the Lommen Firm in Minneapolis, Minnesota. To prepare for his career, Mr. Aucutt obtained a Bachelor of Arts and a Doctor of Jurisprudence, both from the University of Minnesota. Upon obtaining his law degree in 1975, he was admitted to practice law in the state of Minnesota and became an associate at Miller & Chevalier Chartered in Washington, D.C. While serving with this firm, he was admitted to practice law in the District of Columbia, the state of Virginia, the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Tax Court, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, and the U.S. Court of Claims. He became a partner with Miller & Chevalier in 1982, when he was also admitted to practice law in the U.S. Claims Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He was later admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit and the state of Texas. Today, Mr. Aucutt serves as a partner with McGuireWoods LLP in McLean, Virginia.
Outside of the practical work in his field, Mr. Aucutt has also served on boards and councils and as an educator. From 1987 to 1993, he served on the board of advisors of the IRS Practice Alert in New York City. From 1998 to 2003, he served as an adjunct professor at the University of Virginia School of Law. From 2013 to 2016, he served on the advisory council of the IRS. Today, he continues to serve on the advisory committee of the Philip E. Heckerling Institute on Estate Planning at the University of Miami. Mr. Aucutt has also been very charitable throughout his career, most notably serving as president of the Miller and Chevalier Charitable Foundation from 1993 to 1997. He also served on the board of directors of the Evangelical Free Church of America on multiple occasions.
As an accomplished professional, Mr. Aucutt attributes his many successes to John Bixler, who was his mentor while at Miller & Chevalier. In addition, he considers the highlight of his prolific career as serving as president of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) from 2003 to 2004. In his spare time, Mr. Aucutt enjoys walking, reading and participating in church activities. Looking toward the future, Mr. Aucutt plans to retire and spend more time speaking and writing.
