Desiring to become a doctor since the age of 14, Mehmood Riaz Ahmad, MD, FACC, is a native of Sialkot, Punjab, Pakistan. Attending Murray College as an undergraduate student, he subsequently earned a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from King Edward Medical University in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan, in 1967. Immigrating to the United States soon thereafter, he completed a residency at Rutgers, The State University of Jersey, in 1973, where he also served as chief resident physician until 1974. From 1974 to 1976, he also completed a cardiology fellowship at the university. Soon becoming a clinical assistant professor at the university from 1976 to 1981, he also served Saint Clare’s Riverside Medical Center as chief of cardiology and chair of the department of medicine between 1978 and 1985. Since 1976, he has served the medical center as an attending physician and consulting cardiologist. Likewise, he has also been a cardiologist
with the Cardiology Consultants of North Morris since 2012.
Dr. Ahmad was instrumental in establishing the cardiac rehabilitation program. His leadership in establishing echocardiography and cardiac rhythm monitoring systems has been recognized by such publications as The Star-Ledger. He is a co-author of a landmark study on the effect of diabetes mellitus on heart muscle. Dr. Ahmed has been selected as one of America’s Top Cardiologists, one of New Jersey’s Top Doctors, and one of the leading physicians of the world. However, he cites the highlight of his career to be having the ability to help people who are in desperate health situations, aiding them back to wellness.
