Although he was always drawn to law, public policy, business, and economics, Edwin C. Laurenson was initially unsure of how to incorporate all of his interests into a career in law. He prepared for his career in the meantime by graduating magna cum laude from Amherst College with a Bachelor of Arts. He attended law school at Yale University, where he earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence and learned how to combine all of his interests in his practice. Mr. Laurenson went on to practice corporate law, which made for a fulfilling and interesting career.

Mr. Laurenson began his career in 1975 as a law clerk for the Honorable William K. Thomas in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. In the same year he was admitted to practice in the state of Ohio. In 1976, he was admitted to practice in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. In 1977, he was admitted to practice in the state of New York and became an associate at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom in New York City. While with Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, he was also admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. After this appointment, he was admitted to practice in the state of Massachusetts and became an associate at Berman Engel Professional Corporation in Boston. In 1986, he returned to New York to become an associate, then principal attorney, then securities counsel of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison. He finally served as partner at Baker McKenzie before stepping into his current role as partner at McDermott Will & Emery LLP in Menlo Park, CA. Mr. Laurenson was admitted to practice in the state of California in 2017.

Civically, Mr. Laurenson has been active with the Institute on Religion in an Age of Science (IRAS). He has served on their governing council as secretary, vice president of development, annual conference co-chair, and as the current president. He also regularly contributes to the institute’s journal, Zygon: Journal of Religion and Science. In 2006, he was presented with the Service Award by the IRAS.
