A dedicated professional, Dr. Terrell Ward Bynum holds a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from the University of Delaware, a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from the University of Delaware, a Master of Arts in philosophy from Princeton University, a Master of Philosophy from the City University of New York, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the City University of New York. He began his career as an assistant professor of philosophy at American University in Washington, DC, from 1967 to 1968. He then joined the faculty at the University at Albany in the same position from 1968 to 1974. After this, he briefly joined the faculty at Ramapo College of New Jersey before moving on to Dutchess Community College, where he served as an assistant professor and then associate professor from 1975 to 1987. He became an associate professor at Southern Connecticut State University from 1987 to 1989. Today, Dr. Bynum has remained at Southern Connecticut State University, becoming a full professor in 1989 and a distinguished professor in 2016.

In addition to his primary appointments in philosophy education, Dr. Bynum also extended his expertise in the field as the founder, co-founder, director, and chair of professional committees and associations, including the American Philosophical Association, the American Association of Philosophy Teachers, the Research Center on Computing and Society, and the Research Center on Values in Emerging Science and Technology. He also served as an organizer for international conferences on computer ethics. Throughout his career, Dr. Bynum has translated, written, and edited countless industry texts, such as an Oxford University Press scholarly classic and a video series called, “What is Computer Ethics?” He has contributed numerous articles to professional journals on developmental psychology, education, and the philosophies of mathematics and physics. Most recently, Dr. Bynum gave a talk at Dartmouth College in November of 2017 and published an online article for the Research Center on Values in Emerging Science and Technology. For the past four years, he has been studying cosmology.

As an accomplished professor, Dr. Bynum attributes his success to his wife, Alaine, and his parents, Elizabeth and Terrell Bynum. He was also greatly influenced by his high school mentors, Dr. Leah Jordan and Dr. James DeRose, his university mentor, Professor Bernard H. Baumrin, and his professional colleagues, professors James A. Thomas, James H. Moor, Simon Rogerson, Ken Gatzke, Donald Gotterbarn, and Krystyna Gorniak- Gocikowska. In his spare time outside of work, Dr. Bynum enjoys traveling, walking, reading, writing, and bird-watching.
