Interested in the health care industry from a young age, James R. McCartney, MD, pursued a formal education in his youth and obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1952, followed by a Doctor of Medicine from Columbia University in 1955. He completed his internship at the Harvard Medical Unit at the Boston City Hospital for Medicine and residency in psychiatry at Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington, D.C., and the Institute of Living in Hartford, Connecticut. He is a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners, the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and the American Board of Geriatric Psychiatry. Dr. McCartney has since established himself as a prominent figure in the psychiatric field.

Currently an emeritus associate professor of psychiatry at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University, Dr. McCartney has been practicing the specialty since 1961, where he first attended Meadowbrook Hospital as an attending psychiatrist. He subsequently served a number of facilities since his first appointment, including  Nassau Hospital, North Shore University Hospital with Northwell Health, The Miriam Hospital and the Life Span Medical Center, where he briefly held the role of director of geropsychiatry in 1998.

Alongside his primary endeavors, Dr. McCartney lent his time and expertise to higher education as an assistant and associate professor at Brown University, where he received an honorary Master of Arts in 1989. He has also served on the advisory board of the Mental Health Association of Nassau County and was a consultant for the impaired  physician committee at the Rhode Island Medical Society.

A contributor of a myriad of articles to esteemed journals, Dr. McCartney has been a member of the Alzheimer’s Support Group since 2014. Notably, he is a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served as captain on active duty from 1956 until 1958. He was honorably discharged after three years of reserve duty. Married with four children, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, Dr. McCartney attributes his immense success to the support from his loving wife, Lois.
