Elizabeth D. Petty is a mathematics educator in Nashville, Tenn., who, since 2016, has served as a numeracy and data coach at Meigs Middle Magnet School. Dr. Petty has led discussions at various workshops and presentations for teachers seeking national board certifications. Furthermore, she is a member of an accreditation site visit team for the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation. From 2005 to 2016, Dr. Petty served on the faculty at Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Magnet School, thriving in roles as a consulting teacher, instructional coach, data coach and mathematics teacher. Early in her career, Dr. Petty worked in several capacities at Davidson Academy, including as a mathematics teacher and as the curriculum supervisor for mathematics. After commencing her career at Bellevue Middle School, Dr. Petty transitioned into higher learning, holding teaching positions at Cumberland University and Vanderbilt University.
Over the years, Dr. Petty has maintained informed on changes and trends in her industry through a multitude of affiliations. She actively contributes to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics, Tennessee Mathematics Teachers Association and Middle Tennessee Mathematics Teachers Association. Additionally, Dr. Petty is a member of ASCD and the National Education Association. Notably, Dr. Petty co- authored “Activities for Mathematics for Elementary Teachers,” which was published by Vanderbilt University in 1996.
Dr. Petty became involved in her profession after being inspired by her high school mathematics teacher, Beverly Smith. Ms. Smith’s insight resulted in Dr. Petty discovering that the subject of mathematics was interesting and could be used for several purposes. Thus, she earned a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Belmont College in 1991 and a Master of Education from Belmont University in 1995. Subsequently, she received a Ph.D. in mathematics education from Vanderbilt University in 1998.
Recognized as a licensed professional teacher through the State of Tennessee, Dr. Petty is also a national boardcertified teacher in adolescent and young-adulthood mathematics. In acknowledgement of her achievements, Belmont University awarded her the Richard Bryan Award in 1988 and the Byrn Bible Award in 1991. In 2018, she was selected to be featured in Who’s Who of Professional Women (http://www.whoswhoofprofessionalwomen. com/listee-features/elizabeth-petty). Marquis Who’s Who has featured Dr. Petty in publications such as Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who of American Women and Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders.
