Prior to delving into project management, Dr. Shoemaker was an accomplished military serviceman. Commissioned to second lieutenant of the U.S. Army in 1963, he rose through the ranks and became a major in 1971. Thereafter, he was named a foreign area officer, specializing in regions such as Korea, Germany and Vietnam, serving in this position from 1972 until his eventual retirement from the U.S. Army in 1984. In addition, Dr. Shoemaker was a certified flight instructor, serving with the United States Air Force Auxiliary in roles such as Oregon Wing Finance Director, mission transportation pilot, lieutenant colonel and mission commander.
A formal member of the Sons of the American Revolution and The American Legion, Dr. Shoemaker has accrued several accolades in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the military. Named Oregon Wings Safety Officer of the Year, Dr. Shoemaker also earned a Decorated Silver Star for Gallantry in Action, the Commanders Award for Civilian Service, and Oregon Wings Safety Director of the Year in 1990 and 2014. Most recently, he was honored as the Pacific Region Financial Director of the Year in 2016. Notably, he was further elected as a Carl D. Perkins Fellow in 1993.
