Backed by nearly three decades of experience, A.D. Cropper, Ph.D., has established himself as a distinguished leader in the field of engineering. Noted for his expertise in hyperspectral imaging, he has been serving as an electro-optical and infrared engineering fellow of the Raytheon Company since 2013. Moreover, he assists the company as its hyperspectral-imaging technical subject matter expert. In this capacity, he handles system engineering, integration and testing. Previously, Dr. Cropper was the project engineer for process, measurements and controls for Corning Incorporated, as well as a lecturer at the University of the West Indies at St. Augustine. From 1992 to 1995, he worked as a teaching and research assistant at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and from 1989 to 1991, Dr. Cropper was an instructor at Norfolk State University.

Throughout the course of his illustrious career, Dr. Cropper has passionately contributed to his industry through numerous affiliations, including the IEEE, National Society of Black Engineers and the International Society for Hybrid Microelectronics. Since 2002, he has remained an active fellow of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society; he previously served as president of its publishing board and on the board of directors. Dedicated to the welfare of his community, Dr. Cropper has explored numerous civicminded endeavors. He was vice president of the Black Graduate Student Association at Virginia Tech from 1993 to 1994, a member of Christ the King Catholic Church’s Worship Committee from 1991 to 1992, and a speaker at St. Paul’s High School in 1991.

Though Dr. Cropper became involved in the field of aerospace defense by chance, he has always enjoyed engineering. He received a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering in 1984 and a Master of Science in electrical engineering in 1987, both from Howard University. Dr. Cropper ultimately went on to receive a Ph.D. from Virginia Tech in 1995. Since entering his field, he has garnered a multitude of accolades, including being named Professional of the Year by AISES in 2014. Furthermore, he was inducted into Virginia Tech’s Hall of Achievement in 2015. Dr. Cropper was recently recognized with Marquis Who’s Who Lifetime Achievement honors.
