Charles Dean Jefferies, Ph.D., has established himself as a renowned leader in health care education. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science from the University of North Georgia in 1950, Dr. Jeffries held the position of technician for the Georgia Department of Public Health. Prior to matriculating at the University of Tennessee (UT), from which he obtained a master’s degree in 1955, Dr. Jeffries served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953. Upon receiving a Ph.D. from UT in 1958, he was hired by Wayne State University as a microbiology instructor. He served the university in a multitude of roles until his departure in 1996, including as an associate professor, associate of dermatology, professor, acting department chairman, director of the medicine school’s graduate programs, assistant dean for curriculum affairs, voluntary professor in the department of biological sciences, and professor emeritus. Dr. Jeffries would then go on to teach and assume leadership positions at Ross University School of Medicine in Roseau, Dominica. In 2005, he joined Davenport University in Grand Rapids, Mich., as an adjunct instructor at the College of Health Professions.

Throughout the course of his 55-year career, Dr. Jefferies exercised his passion for his profession beyond the classroom by upholding numerous affiliations, including memberships with the American Society for Microbiology, where he is a fellow; the International Society for Human and Animal Mycology; and Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society. Dr. Jefferies also volunteered his time with numerous civic minded groups, such as the American Association of Basic Science Boards, the Michigan Cancer Foundation and the American Institute of Biological Sciences. Passionate about educating others in the field of medicine, Dr. Jefferies made further profound contributions to the American Institute of Biological Sciences as a member of its EPA Advisory Panel, to Wayne State University as president of the school’s Academy Senate, and as president of the Saline Area Senior Council.

Dr. Jefferies has been consistently recognized for his professional accomplishments. He was recently named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who’s Who. From 1959 to 1970, he procured grants from the National Science Foundation and NIH.
