Dr. Cynthia M. Jones has had a long and prestigious career in oceanography, fishery and marine science. Prior to garnering such acclaim, Dr. Jones earned a Bachelor of Arts in zoology from Boston University in 1968 and a Master of Science in Oceanography from the University of Rhode Island (URI). After serving as a graduate research assistant and as an associate at URI, she obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in oceanography in 1984.

Dr. Jones has held numerous professorships since joining Old Dominion University in 1986. Today she is an Eminent Scholar, as well as a professor in the Department of Ocean, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences. Dr. Jones’ other notable career appointments include having served as an adjunct assistant professor at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science at the College of William and Mary, a consultant for Applied Science Associates in Rhode Island, and as a fisheries biologist and oceanographer for the National Marine Fisheries Service.

To remain active in her field, Dr. Jones maintains affiliation with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, where she is a fellow, as well as with the American Fisheries Society, the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography, the Ecological Society of America, the Ecological Society of America, Phi Beta Kappa Society, Phi Sigma and Sigma Xi. Moreover, she previously served on the scientific and statistics committee of the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council.

In honor of her contributions to the field of marine science, Dr. Jones has earned various accolades, including the Faculty Excellence Award and the Outstanding Achievement Award from Old Dominion University, as well as recognition as an Outstanding Professor through the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.
