James L. Repace is a biophysicist and an international secondhand smoke consultant who has conducted research on the hazard, exposure, dose, risk, and indoor air pollution from secondhand smoke. Since 1998, Mr. Repace has provided consulting services through his international consulting firm, Repace Associates, Inc. In addition to having published more than 90 scientific papers, Mr. Repace has contributed his extensive experience to various institutions and associations. He currently serves as an ad-hoc consultant for the Ontario Tobacco Control Unit, a position he has held for over 15 years. Additionally, Mr. Repace has advised personnel at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University, as well as peers at the University of Hong Kong. Prior to establishing Repace Associates, Inc., Mr. Repace worked as an air pollution policy analyst for the United States Environmental Protection Agency — he joined the agency in 1979 — and the United States Department of Labor.

Mr. Repace earned a bachelor’s degree in 1962 and a Master of Science in physics in 1968 from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn (now NYU Tandon). He furthered his education by undertaking postgraduate courses at the University of Maryland and The Catholic University of America. He commenced his career as a senior laboratory technician at Grasslands Hospital’s Radioisotope Laboratory. He then worked as a junior physicist for NYC Health + Hospitals. Since then, Mr. Repace has been a member on various panels on smoking and health, including the California Tobacco- Related Disease Panel, the Surgeon General’s National Advisory Panel on Smoking & Health, and the Epidemiology Panel of the California Tobacco Related Disease Program. He also served Tufts University as a visiting assistant clinical professor for nearly a decade.

In keeping abreast of developments in his field, Mr. Repace maintains membership with the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers; the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate; the International Society for Exposure Science; and the American Public Health Association. He has been affiliated with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Air Pollution Control Association and the American Physical Society.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Mr. Repace has been honored with a bevy of awards. His accolades include the Constance L. Mehlman Award from the International Society of Exposure Science, the Maryland GASP President’s Award for International Tobacco Control Efforts, and a Certificate of Recognition for Excellence in Smoke Studies from the National Cancer Institute of Milan, among many others. Additionally, Marquis Who’s Who has listed Mr. Repace in Who’s Who in the East. He recently received a Certificate of Appreciation from Americans for Nonsmokers’
Rights and an award from the surgeon general. His latest book, “Enemy No. 1: Waging the War on Secondhand Smoke,” is set to be released soon.
