Nurturing children has always been Nancy Lee Collins’ nature. She has always been inspired by the idea of educating and helping them through all stages of their lives. Thus, after earning a Bachelor of Arts from Harris-Stowe State University in 1947, Ms. Collins went on to receive a Master of Education from Saint Louis University in 1955. 13 years later, she received a Master of Arts in Counseling from Washington University in St. Louis. Moreover, Ms. Collins is a certified elementary school and secondary school counselor within the state of Missouri.

Ms. Collins started her career in the education sector in the late 1940s; she was an elementary school teacher and then an adult basic education teacher for the Saint Louis Public Schools district. From 1967 to 1987, she served the school district as a secondary school counselor. After her tenure, she continued to impact her community by holding the position of supervisor of the Computer Mathematics Laboratory at St. Louis Community College-Meramec for one year. In addition, she has been a counselor for Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School’s Seven-Up Program in the city of Ladue, and a tutor of continuing education programs in the suburb of University City.

Throughout the course of her illustrious career, Ms. Collins exercised her passion for both the field of education and her community. In 1963, she became a fellow of the National Science Foundation, and from 1993 to 1995, she served as the local president of Lay Organization’s Missouri Conference. Ms. Collins also served as a member and recruitment chairman for the Missouri Conference AMEC Women’s Missionary Society in 1995. Additionally, Ms. Collins has maintained affiliation with the AAUW, International Society of Poets, National Association of University Women, Missouri State Teachers Association and the Public School Retirement System of the City of St. Louis.

In recognition of her hard work and dedication, Ms. Collins has received a multitude of awards and honors, including the 70-year Member Award from Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Black History in Missouri Appreciation Award from the AAUW. Furthermore, she is an accomplished author and poet, having earned recognition in 2008 for her poem, “The Remaking of America,” from the National Association of University Women (NAUW). Ms. Collins has been featured in Marquis Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education and Who’s Who of American Women.
