Backed by an illustrious career that spans more than 40 years, Professor James A. Angus, AO, is recognized as a renowned professional in the field of pharmacological science. Currently, he serves as a professor emeritus and honorary professional fellow at the University of Melbourne. Dr. Angus launched his career in 1973 as a research fellow for the Hallstrom Institute of Cardiology’s Department of Medicine. He has since held a multitude of roles with numerous universities, including the University of Sydney, Baker Medical Research Institute and Monash University. Dr. Angus’ prominence in the field was first established at the University of Melbourne while serving as the chair of pharmacology from 1993 to 2000. He has also served at the university as a pro-vice chancellor, president of the Academy Board and deputy dean of faculty. When he’s not educating his students, Dr. Angus is serving as the chair of the Victorian Genetics and Genomics’ advisory committee.

Dr. Angus has exercised his passion for pharmacology and medicine through numerous affiliations. He served as a chair of the National Health and Medical Research Council’s Medical Research Grants Committee, member of the International Society of Hypertension’s Scientific Program Committee, member of the Australian Academy of Sciences’ National Committee for Pharmacology, and member of the International Society of Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy’s National Advisory Board. Additionally, Dr. Angus was a director of the Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery and Melbourne Health. Other affiliations include the Center for Eye Research, Bionic Ear Research Institute, Health Innovation Reform Council and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.

In preparation for his career, Dr. Angus earned an honorary Bachelor of Science in pharmacology from the University of Sydney in 1970. He then went on to receive a Doctor of Philosophy in pharmacology from the same university in 1974. Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Angus has received a bevy of awards and recognitions. In 2010, he was named Officer of the Order of Australia. He was also the recipient of the Thomson Citation Laureate Award for Pharmacology in 2004, the Centenary Medal in 2003 and the Alfred Gottschalk Medal in 1984. He was a grantee of the National Heart Foundation from 1979 to 1981, 1988 to 1989, and again from 1990 to 1993. For his professional efforts, Dr. Angus was selected for inclusion in Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, and Who’s Who in the World.
