Dr. Denise Kay DeGarmo began her exemplary career in academia in 1992, when she served as an instructor and a fellow of political science at the University of Michigan. Today, she holds the title of Emerita Professor in the Department of Political Science at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE). She has been teaching international relations and peace studies at SIUE since 2001, specializing in nuclear security. At SIUE, she conducts lectures and seminars, provides community service, and is a facilitator for the foreign policy’s great decisions program at the university. Moreover, Dr. Degarmo has been a research associate for the Applied Research Institute in Jerusalem since 2011.

Dr. DeGarmo earned an Associate of Science from Monroe Community College and a Bachelor of Science from the University at Buffalo. She also holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Michigan. Using her experience in the field, Dr. DeGarmo has written extensively on topics ranging from U.S.-Israeli relations to American politics to civil rights. Some of her notable book titles include: “The U.S.-Israeli Strategic Alliance and the Disappearing Palestine,” “The Geneva Conventions of 1949: The Case of Israel,” and “The Israeli Settlement Enterprise: Grave Breaches of International Law.” Furthermore, she has contributed insightful content published inside “An Encyclopedia of Civil Rights and Liberties,” journal entries such as “Abode of Peace” and “Fermi and Pooh: A Strange Mix,” as well as the creation of an undergraduate teaching manual named “Approaching Democracy.”

In recognition of her achievements, Dr. DeGarmo was honored by Southern Illinois University with the Black Heritage Month Salute to the Stars Award in 2013, a Meridian Award in 2011 and 2012, and a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award in 2011. Moreover, The Illinois Board of Higher Education named Dr. DeGarmo Faculty Member of the Year in 2002. She was recently named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who’s Who, and is featured in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who of American Women.
