A native of Seattle, Washington, Dr. Robert Kanji Fujimara has dedicated over 50 years of his life to exploring and solving biological problems. He has conducted his biochemistry research across the United States and throughout Japan. Dr. Fujimara earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Washington in 1956. He then matriculated at the University of Wisconsin, where he obtained a Master of Science in 1959 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1961. Some of Dr. Fujimara’s achievements include his research in the mechanism of DNA replication with bacteriophage T5 DNA polymerase, assessing Japanese biotechnology for the U.S. Commerce Department, and his research into the molecular basis of HIV-1-associated dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. His studies center on the mutation of colon cancer cells.

Dr. Fujimara has been a volunteer professor at the Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center of the VA Puget Sound Health Care System in Seattle since 2010. Prior to that, he served as a volunteer professor at the Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center at the Miami VA Healthcare System in Florida for almost a decade. Some of his most notable positions include senior resident research associate for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health, and biotechnologist and first secretary for the Embassy of the United States in Tokyo. Additionally, Dr. Fujimara previously served as a professor at the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami, and as an adjunct professor for the Oak Ridge Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and senior staff member of the Oak Ridge Laboratory at the University of Tennessee.

Dr. Fujimara is a former member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and is an emeritus member of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. In 2017, he was recognized with a Who’s Who Lifetime Achievement.
