Dr. Ivar Holmefjord is an accomplished aquaculturist, consultant, and developer of renewable energy. Born in the Norwegian city of Bergen, Dr. Holmefjord earned several degrees from the University of Bergen: a candidatus magisterii (academic degree awarded in Denmark) in 1984, master’s degree in 1986, and Doctor of Philosophy in 1996. He commenced his career in the marine farming industry as a fish farmer for Bolak Co. Ltd. in 1981. Afterward, he fortified his expertise in the field by serving the Institute of Aquaculture Research in Sunndalsøra. For almost two decades, Dr. Holmefjord served the institute in a variety of roles, including as a research assistant, research fellow, scientist, and head of mariculture division. After a 13-year post as director of Real Seafood Ltd., Dr. Holmefjord decided to teach aquaculture at the College of Susar. Since 2014, he has been the director of Green Salmon Ltd.
Aquaculture refers to the breeding, rearing, and harvesting of plants and animals in all types of water environments. As an Aquaculturist, Dr. Holmefjord is dedicated to restoring threatened and endangered aquatic species, rebuilding ecologically important shellfish habitat, producing nutritional and industrial compounds, and providing fish for aquariums. In keeping abreast of developments in his field, Dr. Holmefjord is a member of the Norwegian Association of Aquaculture and the International Council on Exploration of the Sea.
In his spare time, Dr. Holmefjord enjoys playing the piano and mountain walking.
