Supported by nearly 40 years of industry experience, John Attanasio has helped mediate or negotiate many sensitive international disputes. He has advised judiciaries, parliaments, governments, and constitution commissions around the world. His forthcoming book in the Oxford University Press is titled Politics and Capital: Auctioning the American Dream. Eminent authors have praised the book. To prepare for his prestigious career, Mr. Attanasio earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Virginia in 1976. Subsequently, he obtained a Juris Doctor from New York University in 1979 and Master of Laws from Yale University in 1985. Additionally, he holds a Diploma in Law from Oxford University having successfully defended his thesis before a distinguished committee of oral examiners.

Mr. Attanasio is currently chairman and president of the International Academic Institute of Legal Process and Procedure. The Institute is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. Its board and committees include leading figures from government, the judiciary, law, nonprofits, and business. He served as dean of Saint Louis University School of Law, where he was the youngest law dean in the U.S., and for three terms as dean of SMU Dedman School of Law. As dean, he achieved unprecedented numbers in admissions credentials, placement, capital reserves, and fund-raising. He has held the Regan chair as Director of the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at the University of Notre Dame, and the Judge Noel Dean’s chair and Judge Atwell Chair of Constitutional Law at SMU. Mr. Attanasio began his career in litigation. His legal practice has focused on dispute resolution, including litigation, and on advice on broad-ranging issues of governmental and economic policy.

He published two books with the British Institute of International Comparative Law, and many editions of a treatise and casebook with LexisNexis. He has also published numerous articles in top law reviews. His writing and teaching focus on constitutional law, litigation and dispute resolution, law and philosophy, comparative law, law and science, law and religion, and law and economics. He helped found the Appellate Judges Education Institute. Mr. Attanasio has lectured in over 30 countries, including to highest court justices, constitution commissions, parliamentarians, and prominent government officials. For example, he lectured around the world and wrote a series of papers on the Great Recession of 2008. He has organized numerous conferences on such diverse topics as dispute resolution, nuclear arms control, the Financial Crisis of 1998, and September 11. He has team taught courses with highest court Justices from South Africa and the EU, and in 1991, with a Deputy of the USSR Supreme Soviet. In 2014, the SMU Law Review published a symposium issue, titled Rule of Law Symposium in Honor of John Attanasio. In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who’s Who community, Mr. Attanasio has been featured in numerous volumes of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, Who’s Who in the Midwest, and Who’s Who in American Law.
