A prominent researcher within the engineering community, Dr. Richard J. Watts has committed more than 40 years of his career to studying physicochemical treatment processes and teaching future civil and environmental engineers at the highest level. Dr. Watts serves as a professor at Washington State University, where he has worked since 1990, as well as an adjunct professor for the Center for Environmental Studies at Arizona State University. In addition, he has been a partner at Sun-Tech Engineering, Inc. since 1984.

A registered professional civil engineer with the state of California, Dr. Watts’ contributions in the field include the remediation of contaminated soils in groundwater using in situ chemical oxidation. His courses revolve around environmental organic chemistry and hazardous waste engineering. Dr. Watts matriculated at the University of California, Davis and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1976. A few years later, he obtained a Master of Science from Utah State University, and received a PhD in civil and environmental engineering from the same institution in 1984.

For his contributions, Dr. Watts has been recognized with numerous awards. He received the Outstanding Research Faculty award at Washington State University multiple times. He is also the recipient of the Leon Luck Award and the First Place Publication Award from the Utah Water Pollution Control Association. Moreover, Dr. Watts was listed in the 20th Edition of Who’s Who in the West. An avid contributor to industry-related publications, Dr. Watts hopes to publish another textbook within the next five years.
