Backed by more than three decades of professional experience, Mark H. Stoler, M.D., has established himself as a renowned medical leader in the specialties of pathology, cytology and gynecology. Currently, Dr. Stoler holds the titles of professor emeritus of pathology and gynecology, associate director of surgical and Cytopathology, and director of the fellowship in gynecologic pathology at the University of Virginia Health System. He first joined the university in 1993 in dual roles as an associate professor of pathology and an attending pathologist. Prior, Dr. Stoler worked as an attending pathologist for the Cleveland Clinic. At the onset of his professional journey, Dr. Stoler developed his expertise in the field by serving in a variety of roles for the University of Rochester and the college’s medical center.

Over the course of his memorable career, Dr. Stoler has exercised his passion for medicine through a multitude of affiliations. Since 1989, he has been a fellow of the College of American Pathologists’ molecular pathology and cell markers committees. Dr. Stoler has also held memberships with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Medical Association, the American Society for  Investigative Pathology (ASIP) and the American Society of Cytology. From 2000 to 2012, he served on the board of directors for the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP). Additionally, he had a brief tenure as president of the society from 2009 to 2010.

Dr. Stoler armed himself with a strong educational foundation on the road to becoming a celebrated pathologist and educator. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology, magna cum laude, from the University of Rochester in 1976, and then went on to receive a Doctor of Medicine from the same institution in 1980. After completing internships in medicine and pathology at Rochester General Hospital and at the University of Rochester Medical Center, respectively, Dr. Stoler began his residency in pathology. He would later become chief resident at the University of Rochester Medical Center, a post he held from 1983 to 1984.

A diplomate of the American Board of Pathology, the American Board of Cyopathology and the National Board of Medical Examiners, Dr. Stoler has received many accolades throughout the years, including the Israel Davidsohn Award for Distinguished Service and the George F. Stevenson Distinguished Service Award, both from the ASCP. Further, he has been listed in Marquis Who’s Who publications such as Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who’s Who in the South and Southwest.
